Dioctyl terephthalate is a colorless viscous liquid with a chemical formula of C24H38O4. It is a diester of terephthalic acid and the branched-chain 2-ethylhexanol. Dioctyl terephthalate is environmentally safe thus making it an excellent replacement for dioctyl phthalate which was banned from the European market as it has most of the properties of dioctyl phthalate less the implications.
Dioctyl terephthalate is produced from the esterification process of terephthalic acid and 2-ethylhexanol. This reaction is rapid and is possible to complete in less than 6 hours.
The second method uses dimethyl terephthalate with 2-ethylhexanol in the transesterification process.
Dioctyl terephthalate can be used as a softening agent, such as to make the product easier to rebound and less likely to undergo deformation under pressure. It has uses in applications such as extrusion, calendering, injection molding, rotational molding, dip molding, slush molding, and coating.
DOTP is the PVC product used in the passenger car. It can also resolve the issue of fogging on the glass window. It can also be used in the paint and coating of high-ranking furniture and interior decoration, high-quality lubricant or lubricant additive of a precise instrument, additive for nitrocellulose varnish, paper softener, etc.
